The Servant’s Garden

...we are stewards of God’s gifts

… is about being good stewards of the gifts which God has given us. Hundreds of pounds of fresh, organically grown vegetables have been donated to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen for the homeless and needy. Many volunteers are needed to cultivate, plant, weed and harvest vegetables.

Although Christ The Servant Lutheran Church conducted a blessing of The Servant's Garden in May 2005, the garden was first started in the fall of 2004 and was a lot smaller than its current size. God has truly blessed us with a resource that can feed the homeless and hungry.

The success of The Servant's Garden is possible only by the grace of God and the members and friends of Christ The Servant Lutheran Church. Thanks to the warmer Texas climate we have two growing seasons in the Denton area. We plant both spring and fall gardens. In 2006, the Servant’s Garden delivered over 1,000 pounds of fresh organic produce to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. The community outreach from the garden has been recognized by the Denton Record Chronicle and The Lutheran magazine.

The Servant’s Garden incorporates organic and sustainable gardening practices. No toxic chemicals are used for pest control and no synthetic fertilizers are used. To conserve ground moisture and energy needed to cultivate for weeds and increase crop production, The Servant’s Garden uses ground mulch and drip irrigation.

All congregation members are welcome to help. Work days are scheduled about once a month, and congregational members often stop by the garden to pull a weed, water, or contribute to the composting operation. Contact Monty for more information or to be added to the e-mail list to receive notices of scheduled garden work times.
